"Is the 'Calories in, Calories out' Approach Really the Key to Weight Loss?"

coachsuzannepatrick

Looking, feeling and being healthy doesn't come from just counting calories. In fact, calories as a stand alone really only address your weight, the number on the scale.

I personally ain't got time for counting calories and I'm not preparing to compete on stage but... what I DO pay attention to is what types of foods I'm eating.

All foods can be labeled as a protein, carb or fat or a combination of any of the above. That's it. These are macronutrients or macros and they play a role in your body composition and how you look, how much muscle or fat you have or don't. Total macros equals calories.

I always focus on eating protein and veggies. And we teach our kids the same. Why?

Protein fuels muscle. Muscle is energy. Energy is life. Protein supports immune health and healing. And the list goes on.

Veggies are a carb and they contain fiber, vitamins, minerals, enymzes and life. These essential nutrients- vitamins and minerals are micronutrients and they play a role in how you feel and function.

What about fats you ask? I don't need much according to my genes and it's easy for most people to consume fats. Olive oil, nuts, nut butter, avocado, guac, eggs... My salad had oil and olives so there's my fat.

You can hit macros and/or calories while eating nutrient dense foods or man-made junk foods. But if you're aim is looking, feeling and BEING healthy, you need micronutrients and macros (nutrients) that all equal a healthy calorie range for you. And for most people, the calories naturally and easily fall into alignment when we're eating healthfully. We won't have room for excess amounts of cookies or other "junk" food bc we're satisfied and don't have uncontrollable cravings.

Salad variation for today? Pesto and left over grilled turkey patty.
